What is IASTM (Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization)?
At Joayo Therapy, we’re always looking for ways to enhance your healing journey—and one of the tools we’re proud to offer is IASTM, or Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization. This advanced therapy technique allows for deeper, more targeted treatment of soft tissue injuries, chronic pain, and tension.
Jinjoo (JJ), one of our skilled RMTs, is trained in this technique and incorporates it thoughtfully into her sessions for clients who may benefit from more precise, focused relief.
How Does IASTM Work?
IASTM uses specially designed tools made of stainless steel or medical-grade plastic to gently glide over the skin and identify areas of restriction, tension, or inflammation. When used properly, these tools help break up scar tissue, fascial adhesions, and muscle knots, promoting better circulation and stimulating the body’s natural healing processes.
Unlike deep tissue massage done solely with the hands, IASTM allows JJ to apply consistent pressure and target problem areas with greater accuracy, all while minimizing discomfort during treatment.
What Are the Benefits?
IASTM can be incredibly effective for both acute and chronic conditions, especially those that haven’t responded fully to traditional massage techniques. Benefits may include:
✔️ Improved range of motion and flexibility
✔️ Faster recovery from muscle strains and soft tissue injuries
✔️ Reduction in chronic inflammation and tension
✔️ Enhanced circulation and lymphatic drainage
✔️ Relief from long-standing pain caused by repetitive stress or poor posture
Conditions Commonly Treated with IASTM
Clients often seek IASTM when dealing with:
Tendonitis (e.g., Tennis Elbow, Golfer’s Elbow)
Inflammation of the tendons due to repetitive motion or overuse, causing pain, stiffness, and weakness in the affected area—commonly seen in the elbow, wrist, or shoulder.Plantar Fasciitis
A painful condition affecting the sole of the foot, especially the heel, caused by inflammation of the plantar fascia. Often worse in the morning or after long periods of standing.Neck and Shoulder Stiffness
Tightness and restricted mobility in the neck and upper shoulders, often linked to stress, posture issues, or prolonged desk work.IT Band Syndrome
Pain or tightness along the outer thigh, caused by irritation of the iliotibial band—common in runners and those with hip/knee imbalances.Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Compression of the median nerve in the wrist leading to numbness, tingling, and weakness in the hand—often from repetitive strain or improper ergonomics.Lower Back Pain
Discomfort or stiffness in the lumbar spine region, which can stem from poor posture, muscle strain, injury, or chronic stress.Chronic Muscle Tightness or Knots
Persistent areas of tension or "trigger points" in muscles that restrict movement and cause dull, aching pain or spasms.Post-Injury Scar Tissue & Mobility Issues
After injury or surgery, scar tissue can limit range of motion and cause discomfort. Soft tissue work helps break down adhesions and restore movement.
Whether you’re a weekend warrior, musician, office worker, or new parent—IASTM can be adapted to meet your unique needs.
What to Expect During Your Session
For comfort and accessibility, clients receiving IASTM are encouraged to wear athletic shorts and a sports bra or tank top, but treatment can also be done fully clothed, depending on the area being treated.
Jinjoo will always begin with a discussion of your symptoms and goals before incorporating IASTM. It’s a gentle yet effective method, and many clients describe a sense of deep release and renewed mobility after just one session.
Prioritize Your Wellness This April
April is the perfect time to focus on yourself—releasing tension, addressing pain, and restoring balance. Whether you’re recovering from an injury, managing chronic discomfort, or simply in need of relaxation, JJ’s intuitive and professional approach to massage therapy is here to support you.
