Why Choose Pilates?

Pilates is more than just an exercise; it's a comprehensive system designed to improve physical strength, flexibility, posture, and mental awareness. Originating from the early 20th century, Pilates was developed by Joseph Pilates and has since gained worldwide recognition for its effectiveness in enhancing overall health. The method focuses on controlled movements, which can be modified to cater to all fitness levels, making it an ideal exercise for individuals of all ages and abilities.

Pilates emphasizes core strength, which is essential for maintaining proper alignment and preventing injuries. Regular practice can lead to improved posture, increased muscle tone, and enhanced coordination. Furthermore, Pilates is known for its benefits in stress reduction and mental clarity, offering a holistic approach to well-being.

Brenda Lim is a fully certified Pilates instructor through Stott Merrithew, specializing in matwork, reformer, cadillac, stability chair, and barrels. Brenda's journey into Pilates began after she experienced a severe accident that resulted in shoulder, hip, and knee injuries. During her recovery, she discovered rehabilitative Pilates, which played a crucial role in her healing process. This life-changing experience inspired her to pursue a deep study of the Pilates method. Brenda also completed the Injury and Special Populations program through Merrithew. She is passionate about helping her clients achieve mindful and functional movement goals, contributing to their holistic health and well-being. Brenda believes in the transformative power of Pilates and is dedicated to guiding her clients on their path to recovery and strength.

Madeleine Sandl, known as Maddie, is a friendly and passionate Pilates instructor from Western Australia. She recently joined the Joayo Therapy team in Burnaby and brings with her a rich background in physiotherapy. With four years of experience as a physiotherapist, Maddie was captivated by the positive effects of Pilates on her clients and decided to deepen her knowledge by pursuing a Diploma of Clinical Pilates from Breathe Education in 2022. Maddie is enthusiastic about educating her clients and teaching them how to move in ways that enhance their well-being. She loves the versatility of Pilates, which offers a range of exercises from strength and endurance to power and flexibility. The Expanded Studio: More Space, More Options

Our newly expanded Pilates studio is designed to provide a comfortable and inspiring environment for all our clients. The larger space allows us to offer a wider variety of classes and equipment, accommodating more participants while ensuring that everyone has enough room to move freely and safely.

Group Classes with Reformers, Chairs, and Barrels: Our group classes now include exercises using reformers, chairs, and barrels, providing a diverse and comprehensive workout. Reformers are well-known for their ability to enhance strength, flexibility, and balance through controlled, resistance-based movements. Chairs and barrels add another dimension to the practice, allowing for a broader range of exercises that target different muscle groups and improve overall body alignment.

Personalized Attention: Despite the larger space, we maintain a strong focus on personalized attention. Whether you are in a group class or a one-on-one session, our instructors are dedicated to providing individualized guidance and support. This ensures that you perform each exercise correctly and effectively, maximizing the benefits of your Pilates practice.

State-of-the-Art Equipment: Our studio is equipped with state-of-the-art Pilates equipment, designed to accommodate all fitness levels. From beginners to advanced practitioners, everyone can find exercises that challenge and inspire them. The variety of equipment allows us to offer specialized classes that target specific needs, such as injury rehabilitation, strength building, and flexibility improvement.

The Benefits of Pilates

Pilates offers numerous benefits for both the body and mind. Here are some key advantages of incorporating Pilates into your fitness routine:

1. Improved Core Strength: Pilates is renowned for its focus on core strength. A strong core is essential for maintaining proper posture, preventing injuries, and supporting overall physical health. The controlled movements in Pilates exercises engage the deep abdominal muscles, leading to a stronger and more stable core.

2. Enhanced Flexibility: Pilates exercises involve a range of movements that stretch and lengthen muscles, improving flexibility and reducing the risk of injuries. Increased flexibility also enhances overall mobility and makes daily activities easier and more comfortable.

3. Better Posture: Poor posture can lead to various health issues, including back pain and decreased mobility. Pilates emphasizes proper alignment and body awareness, helping you develop better posture habits. Improved posture not only reduces the risk of injuries but also enhances your overall appearance and confidence.

4. Stress Reduction: The mindful and controlled movements in Pilates promote relaxation and stress reduction. Focusing on your breath and body during Pilates sessions can help calm your mind, reduce anxiety, and improve mental clarity. Many practitioners find that Pilates becomes a form of moving meditation, allowing them to release tension and find inner peace.

5. Injury Rehabilitation: Pilates is widely recognized for its effectiveness in injury rehabilitation. The low-impact, controlled movements make it an ideal exercise for individuals recovering from injuries or dealing with chronic pain. Our instructors, including Brenda Lim and Maddie Sandl, have extensive experience in rehabilitative Pilates and are skilled at designing programs that support your recovery journey.

6. Improved Balance and Coordination: Pilates exercises challenge your balance and coordination, helping you develop better body awareness and control. Improved balance reduces the risk of falls and enhances your ability to perform everyday activities with ease.

7. Increased Strength and Endurance: Pilates builds strength and endurance through controlled resistance exercises. By targeting specific muscle groups, Pilates helps you develop lean, toned muscles without adding bulk. Regular practice leads to increased overall strength and stamina.
